Why Labioplasty?
As with all matters sexual in Western culture generally and American society in particular, the procedure known as labioplasty is surrounded by a fair amount of controversy. It is important that women who wish to undergo such genital surgery do so for the right reasons.
In fact, this indeed appears to be the case with nearly 70% of the women who seek labioplasty. An elongated labia is a protuberance that can cause genuine physical discomfort, irritation and even pain when attempting to engage in physical activity or remaining seated for long periods of time while wearing tight-fitting undergarments. Pain is also often experienced during sexual intercourse as the labia is forced inside in a painful manner during penetration.
Other reasons include embarrassment when wearing form-fitting outfits such as swimsuits, and even with sexual partners.
However, according to a U.K. medical journal, the demand for labioplasty has increased dramatically, doubling since 2003. The doctors who conducted the study for the May 2007 issue of the British Medical Journal reported that most of the women who sought the procedure wanted to improve genital appearance:
Patients consistently wanted their vulvas to be flat with no protrusion beyond
the labia majora… some women brought along images to illustrate the desired
appearance, usually from adverts or pornography that may have been digitally
altered.
Herein lies the controversy: is the growing demand for genital surgery being driven by a desire for relief from discomfort and potential embarrassment, or by marketing?
This is a real concern. We have seen a disturbing number of ads for vaginal rejuvenation, designer vaginoplasty, revirgination and G-spot amplification. In too many cases, these ads are run by unethical physicians who are not trained in plastic and reconstructive surgery, but who have been seduced by the potential for large profits. The results of surgery performed by these unqualified individuals can be tragic.
Done properly by a Board-certified plastic surgeon who has been trained in and employs the latest techniques using modern laser surgical equipment, labioplasty is one of the safest plastic surgical procedures available, with a very high degree of patient satisfaction when it comes to results.
Be certain that you are looking for labioplasty for the right reasons, that you are doing it for your own comfort and well-being and not to fit a commercial ideal, and most importantly that your doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.
