Good Players Lose Too
Yep, you can be a good online poker player and still lose. I’m not talking about the variance downswings of losing, I’m talking about being an overall losing poker online player. What? Doesn’t that contradict itself. Well yes and no. I mean if you’re good you’d assume you’re winning, but too many good online poker players I see end up losing anyway even though they have the skills to win. And here are a few reasons why. First, they pick tables to play at with too many other good players. This is an easily correctible mistake. You simply scout your tables better and end up with more of the player pool being either calling stations or passive players you can take advantage of. The next one is a bit of a leak that is also easily correctible with a little observance. Bluffing the wrong people. If it looks like a donk, bets like a donk, and plays like a donk it’s probably a donk. And these people are not to be bluffed. They live to call so stop trying to bluff them and just outplay them with your better hands. In smaller stakes, they try to play above the level of competition. Sure your check raise bluff with air might work against a player at the 3/6 600 NL level, but in the early levels, you don’t have to get trappy. Just play your ABC poker and you’ll be taking down more pots with less struggle than if you were trying to play trappy poker. Finally, and I’ve mentioned this before. You play when you’re tired. You may be good, but you can only sustain a concentrated effort for so long. Once your mind wears down, it’s time to quit, even if the game is a good one you’re winning in. As it only take one misjudged all in and you’re back to even or down.
